Hi,

I wanted to give my 2 cents, because I read your post on the Perch.net, but I don't have a membership there. I know you've been thinking about getting a BCC in addition to your baby grey, so I wanted to share my experience. I have a CAG and a cherry-headed conure (similar temperament to a BCC). My conure is a LOT of work. He screams, is needy, makes a mess, etc. - and needs a lot of personal attention. Because of the size difference between the two of them, we cannot let them interact. This is even more important if your birds are not flighted, as even birds that are companions can hurt each other in the course of normal squabbles, if there is a substantial beak difference and no means of escape. And I know you mentioned the extra cage, but just keep in mind that birds x2 = cost x2. Both of my babies can destroy a $20 toy in a single day. They eat a ton, both specialty diets, homeopathic suppliments, and fresh fruits and veggies. I spend at least 45 minutes every morning getting their food ready and cleaning their cages. My average vet bills (well bird visits) are $500 for the two of them. Sick visits are more expensive, and because they share some living space, they BOTH have to be checked out. On average, I spend $50 per month on toys, and $100 every month on food. I'm not saying not to do it - obviously I did, but just make sure it's the right thing. I know you said your daughter is very responsible, but she's also 9, and will need some help. Conures tend to go through a bitey/nippy terrible twos (mine lasted 4 years before he settled down again), which can be tough for children to deal with. They also tend to have some attachment issues, which is something you should consider, assuming that at some point your daughter will go to college (your bird will still be around!). I would recommend some time on the Conure Community board (www.conurecommunity.com) poking around and reading the forum posts. I'm on there a lot, and would be happy to answer any questions for you. Just some things to think about when you're making your decision - and congratulations on your TAG!
